RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.
The location, located using intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of access tunnels down to the site... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.
There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.
The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
Daesh - also known as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This operation shows British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.
UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.
"I want to thank every member of British forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," he said. "Including them were a great many British troops deployed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate militants who threaten our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."
Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The United Nations says IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
