Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
